The Mrs. International 2011 Pageant Begins!

On Tuesday July 19, 2011 the Mrs. International Pageant kicks off it's week of pageantry and friendship! I am so excited to meet all of the 2011 ladies and the International Pageant family.

Meet Evan Ranieri

As a mother I have always said "Ask any mother her greatest fear and she will tell you it's for the safety of her children. It has been said that there is no other human bond comparable to that of a mother and child. I do believe it to be true.

Meet Evan Ranieri, born March 10, 2011. Evan was born with "small and echogenic" kidneys, which means his kidneys are half the size they should be. It also means that his kidney function is only 20% which is about the cut off for when dialysis is needed.

Can you imagine giving birth to your dream come true baby and you are told that he or she was in renal failure? I imagine it would be shocking and a bit unconceivable. And that is exactly how Melissa and Paul Ranieri felt.

With much faith, prayer, love and support from family, friends and their powerful medical team the Ranieri family is fighting back. They are Godly people who believe in the power of prayer. They believe in their son Evan and they believe that God has a special plan for them and Evan. Maybe that plan is to share their journey with other kidney families in the kidney community.

Big Sister Avery takes extra special care of her baby brother Evan.

As for now Melissa and Paul are doing eveything possible to keep Evan healthy and keep him growing strong. Evan will have to be 22lbs before he could receive a kidney transplant. His parents Paul and Melissa would likely both be a match/donor.

I have always had the greatest respect for the arts in any form. Whether it be live theatre, dance, music or visual art, all of it intriques me.

I believe everyone should have a piece of the arts in their lives. Fine arts expand the boundaries of learning and encourage creative thinking and a deeper understanding of the core subjects, which are language arts, math, science, and social studies. Teaching the arts is the most powerful tool that teachers can present in their classrooms because it enables students to achieve their highest level of learning.

To help with my preparations for the Mrs. International 2011 competition, I had the opportunity to attend The Competitive Image Trunk Show in Dothan, Alabama. Truly a dream come true! It's like being a child in a candy store! Sweet, sweet shopping!

Attending the trunk show is also the perfect opportunity to meet the Mrs. International staff, especially Mrs. Mary Richardson! Mary is truly a dynamic lady! She treats each and every contestant with grace and kindness. Not to mention she has impeccable taste!

More than 13 years ago, Francine Hillpot of Staten Island, NY, was told that she had chronic kidney disease and could expect her kidneys to fail within two years. Instead of sulking, this 55-year old mother and executive assistant became vigilant about her health. Hillpot began monitoring her kidney function regularly and following a healthy diet which helped her stave off kidney failure for a full decade. It was only after undergoing chemotherapy treatment to combat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that her kidneys shut down and she needed to rely on dialysis to do what her kidneys no longer could.

After receiving in-center hemodialysis for 18 months, Francine discovered she had the option of doing the treatment at home.

“At first, I was skeptical about the home option,” she said. “I feared that I wouldn’t be able to administer the treatment properly and safely. But after my husband, Richard, and I underwent eight weeks of extensive training, I was comfortable doing my treatment at home.”

Now every morning, Hillpot spends her three hours of home dialysis answering work-related phone calls and e-mails. She even squeezes in some time to listen to music and watch her favorite shows. Hillpot also now has more time to spend shopping with her daughter Rachel and indulging in her fitness passion. She jogs, lifts weights and goes to the gym regularly.

“My advice to people who are beginning dialysis is to be patient and research all your treatment options,” said Hillpot.“When I made the choice to switch to home treatment, I was able to live my life on my own schedule, instead of being tied to the center. For a busy person who needs flexibility, this was terrific. For other people, the center is the right place. The key is to know you have options and pick the one that’s best suited to your lifestyle.”

People always talk about volunteering as if it is only about giving. They seldom talk about the benefits derived from volunteer work. Volunteering allows you to gain work experience in just about any field you can imagine. It is also a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, whether you are working at an animal shelter or for a political campaign. And even though it may be a huge help to the organization or group you are working for, it can also be incredibly fun.

What one word describes you as a wife? Why?

VIBRANT - Vigorous, energetic, radiant, lively, sparkling, vivacious and vital. From the very first day we met, my darling husband Michael has always told me that I am a Vibrant Woman. Thanks honey!

Invite us to your state and why would we want to vacation there?

The Pristine Ocean Beaches stretch from the south east coastline to Florida (America's Playground) then through the Gulf of Mexico. Country and Contemporary music in Nashville or the food and blues of New Orleans to San Antonio's Riverwalk - whatever you want, it's in my Southern States.

What is the best advice you have been given about pageants?
To always aim for Mrs. Congeniality. One of the many gifts from The Mrs. International Pageant Experience is acquiring lifelong friendships from across the globe. I have met the most amazing accomplished beautiful women that I am privileged to call my friends.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Continuing my Life Time Kidney Advocacy with The National Kidney Foundation, watching my young adult children thrive, mentoring our youth to become self inspiring, advancing my degree, writing a book and living a honeymoon lifestyle with the love of my life.

World Kidney Day 2011

World Kidney Day, celebrated on March 10th every year, aims to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

The Day has the following objectives:

Raise awareness about our kidneys.

Highlight that diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Encourage systematic screening of all patients with diabetes and hypertension for CKD.

Encourage preventive behaviours.

Educate all medical professionals about their key role in detecting and reducing the risk of CKD.

The 2011 World Kidney Day Campaign focuses on the important association between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the fact that CKD is a major risk for CVD. The slogan for this year's campaign is "Protect Your Kidneys and Save Your Heart".

Kidneys serve a very important function in the human body, mainly to remove toxins and excess water from our blood. They help to control our blood pressure and red blood cell productions and keep our bones healthy.

Your kidneys work hard for you so take good care of them.

March is National Kidney Month in the United States and March 10, 2011 is World Kidney Day. Both commemorations are intended to raise awareness of kidney disease and the importance of prevention and early detection. Kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, but persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than develop kidney disease.

In 2000, approximately 36 million U.S. adults had CKD. However, in 1999 - 2004, only 42% of adults with severe kidney disease (stage 4) and fewer than 10% of those with less severe disease (stages 1 -3) were aware of their conditions. CDC, in collaboration with partners, has developed the Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative, including surveillance and screening projects and studies of CKD costs. Additional information is available at www.cdc.gov/diabetes/projects/kidney.htm.

This year, World Kidney Day focuses on high blood pressure, which, along with diabetes, is a leading cause of CKD. Where Are the Kidneys & How Do They Function?

There are two kidneys, each about the size of a fist, located on either side of the spine at the lowest level of the rib cage. Each kidney contains up to a million functioning units called nephrons. A nephron consists of a filtering unit of tiny blood vessels called a glomerulus attached to a tubule.When blood enters the glomerulus, it is filtered and the remaining fluid then passes along the tubule. In the tubule, chemicals and water are either added to or removed from this filtered fluid according to the body's needs, the final product being the urine we excrete.

The kidneys perform their life-sustaining job of filtering and returning to the bloodstream about 200 quarts of fluid every 24 hours. About two quarts are remove from the body in the form of urine, and about 198 quarts are recovered. The urine we excrete has been stored in the bladder for anywhere from 1 to 8 hours.

Pretty impressive wouldn't you say?

One of my greatest joys in life is mentoring young ladies and gentlemen to become self inspiring.

The word "mentor" comes from the Greek for "steadfast" and "enduring." Mentoring is the one-to-one or group relationship that one or more adults develop with one or more young people to help them develop and succeed.

My entire life I have been blessed to have loving, caring people in my life to offer me guidance and friendship. My parents, teachers, coaches, dance instructors, clergymen, friends and so many more incredible people have made me the woman I am today.

Nothing brings me greater pleasure than paying it forward to our youth so that they too can become more confident and reach their goals.

I would like to congratulate Milena Rodriguez on her sweet victory of winning Miss Fort Lauderdale Teen USA 2012! Way to go Milena! Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.

Celebrating 60 Years!

Offering Hope and Help for 60 Years.....

On November 15, 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Harry DeBold called the first meeting of the Committee for Nephrosis Research. Several months earlier, Mrs.DeBold's infant son was stricken with nephrosis, a condition about which little was known and for which little could be done. Her determination not to succumb to the grim reality of her son's disease and her affluence were important elements which led to the formation of the National Nephrosis Foundation (NNF), the inaugural lay group destined to become the National Kidney Foundation, which was officially so named in 1964.

The National Kidney Foundation is proud to have contributed to medical advances, public education and legislation that has helped thousands of kidney patients and organ recipients live richer, fuller lives.

The NKF has evloved into a thriving organization taking a leadership role in all aspects of kidney prevention and care - from patient education, services and advocacy to the development and dissemination of groundbreaking clinical guidelines and the support of organ donation and research.

Thanks to all who have made the first 60 years so successful, and to all those who will help continue to serve the needs of kidney patients and families in the years ahead.

Just imagine how exciting the next 60 years will be!

PKD Stops with ME!

Walk for PKD is the PKD Foundation's Signature Fundraising Event. It gives us an opportunity to raise funds, inspire, educate and defy this disease that has disrupted my life and my families life. This years slogan is "PKD Stops with Me".

It was the most perfect South Florida morning for our walk. And it's always so much fun connecting with my PKD family. There is so much love and dedication that goes into one of these events. All of us truly share a deep connection.

It was also a day to remember and honor our beloved mother Judie Brown. We love and miss you everyday mom!

Great thanks to the PKD Foundation and all the volunteers who make this event so very successful.

United we continue to help hasten the day we conquer PKD!

Haunted High Fund Raiser

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Fine Arts Department held their annual Haunted High fund raiser and food drive on Friday October 29, 2010.

The event is produced by the drama students and parents to raise funds for upcoming theater productions, costumes, technical equipment, etc. Every year in addition to Haunted High the drama department collects and distributes canned goods to benefit Harvest for the Hungry.

The drama students are so very talented with amazing imagination! It was truly a very scary haunted high!
We thank all the students and parents for making this a very successful event. We hope to see you next year at Haunted High.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - it is the month when people become more educated about the signs of breast cancer, it's symptoms, and how to help prevent it.

Out of every seven women, one will develop breast cancer at some time during her lifetime (USA), compared to just one in twenty during the 1960's.

Holly Ford, of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, is asking people to wear pink as a sign of suppport for breast cancer awareness. She says that by wearing pink you will help create awareness.

Facts about breast cancer:
~ It is the most common malignancy in women.
~ It is the second cause of cancer death.
~ It is three times more common than all gynecologic malignancies put together.
~ 211,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed in the USA each year.
~ 43,000 women die from breast cancer in the USA each year.
~ 1 in every 100 breast cancer patients is male.
~ 50% of all breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 65.
~ Breast cancer is much more aggressive when it developes in younger women.

Today I had the privilege of attending the 5th Annual Broward County Go Red For Women 2010 Celebration. My father Kevin was my companion for the luncheon. Each day more and more men are joining "Men Go Red For Women." I am proud to tell you that my father is now a "Red Tie Man."

My father knows all too well about the importance of being heart smart. At age 45 he suffered a massive heart attack which required triple bypass surgery. Ten years later he suffered a stroke. It was then the doctors placed a pacemaker and defibrillator into his chest. My father is also a diabetic and has glaucoma. Needless to say he is my walking miracle. I know the lord has kept him in this life for so many reasons and I cherish each and everyday with him!

Florida International Pageants 2011

I am so excited to announce that Florida International Pageants will have a triple crowning pageant this year! The pageant takes place September 10th - 12th at The Radisson World Gate Resort, Kissimmee, Florida.

The pageant is under the co-directorship of Michael Galanes and Marianne Oden ~ Mrs. International 2001.

Miss Florida Teen International 2011, Miss Florida International 2011 and Mrs. Florida International 2011 will all be crowned on the same stage. The new title holders will then compete in their national pageants next summer in Chicago, Illinois.

Good luck ladies and I will see you all at the pageant!

On July 29, the U.S. Senate passed S. Res 592 officially designating September 13-19, 2010 as "Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Week." The resolution supports the goals and ideals of PKD Awareness Week to raise awareness, understanding and impact of the disease. Passing the resolution is a great step toward helping raise awareness for PKD among members of Congress and the public.

KEEP ~ Kidney Early Evaluation Program

The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) offers free screening for those at risk - anyone 18 years and older with high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease. It is designed to raise awareness about kidney disease among high risk individuals and provide free testing and educational information, so that kidney disease and it's complications can be prevented or delayed.

KEEP provides three simple tests that determine kidney function to nearly 2,500 people each month in dozens of cities across the U.S. Participants receive a comprehensive health risk appraisal, blood pressure measurement, blood and urine testing and the opportunity to discuss their health and review results with onsite clinicians.

The program, which recently screened its 130,000 participant, is finding kidney disease at the earliest stage possible.

I had the opportunity to work with The National Kidney Foundation at the Miami KEEP program. It was so incredible seeing The National Kidney Foundation at work. They are truly amazing! There is no other organization like them and I am honored to be a part of the NKF family!

I had the privilege of getting to meet and greet the people who traveled all across the state of Florida to come and get their free kidney screening. It was a pleasure getting to know them and I thank them for letting me share my family story with them about kidney disease.

The Fourth of July was declared a legal holiday in 1941, and today it is celebrated each year in all states and territories of the United States. It is a reminder of the ideals on which the United States was founded, and on July 4th Americans celebrate their freedom and independence with great fanfare -- it is a day of picnics and patriotic parades, a night of concerts and fireworks.

Chronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decreases their ability to keep you healthy by doing the jobs listed. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count),weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Twenty six million Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease and millions of others are at increased risk. That means one in nine Americans are affected and most don't even know it.

Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
Once renal failure occurs patients need a kidney transplant or dialysis treatments for survival.

I had the opportunity to visit with 38 dialysis patients at The Florida Kidney Center in Lauderhill, Florida. I was completely moved by their heart felt stories and their amazing courage. Yes, I felt sad because it is extremely difficult knowing that these incredible people are all in renal failure. It was also amazing to bond with them and share my family history about kidney disease and my mission of expanding kidney disease awareness and education.

Pineapple Frangelico Sorbet
(4 servings)

~ 2 cups fresh pinapple
~ 1/2 cup pineapple juice, unsweetned
~ 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons Frangelico
~ 2 teaspoons Stevia

In a food processor, blend everything together, until smooth. Place in an ice-cube tray and freeze. When frozen, blend in a food processor one more time, making the sorbet fluffy. Re-freeze before serving. Enjoy!

A FAMILY AFFAIR.......The Mrs. International Pageant system was developed to promote today's married women, their accomplishments and commitment to family and marriage. Around the world women are finding this system to be the opportunity to work with their husband and family to become positive role models. Being the premiere pageant for married women has given Mrs. International a chance to open doors for married women around the world.

As I prepare for The Mrs.International 2010 competition which will be held July 16th and 17th, 2010, at the Northshore Center for the Perfroming Arts in Chicago, Illinois, ladies across the country are also preparing for their 2011 Mrs. International preliminary state competitions.

As Mrs. Florida International 2010, I had the privilege of crowning Farranah Pierre ~ Mrs. Little Haiti International 2011. Congratulations Farranah as you embark on your new blessing and journey! Ways To Observe Memorial Day ~

Memorial Day reminds us of our duties towards the wounded soldiers and the bereaved families, orphans and widows of our fallen soldiers. We should honor the fallen by adorning their sacred remains with flowers and garlands and show our gratitude towards them in the following ways:

Adorning the graves of the soldiers with flags or flowers.

Visit cemeteries and memorials.

Furling the American Flag at half-mast until noon.

Furling the "POW/MIA Flag"

Keep silence for a minute at 3pm.,"National Moment of Remembrance".

Take a pledge to aid the disabled veterans, widows, widowers and orphans.

Support the efforts to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th.

Offer a personal thank you to a veteran and his family for their sacrifice.

First Steps After Diagnosis of CKD

Newly diagnosed with Kidney Disease? Knowledge is Power.

Being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be a very trying and difficult time for everyone involved-the patient, along with family and friends. But information can go a long way towards helping gain control of the situation. A patient who knows what's coming up, what to watch out for and what treatment options are available if his kidneys fail totally can make educated decisions about his own healthcare.

At first talk with your doctor about pinpointing your diagnosis to assess your kidney function to help plan your treatment. Tests are conducted to determine the stage and type of kidney disease, the size of the kidneys and the damage already done. After receiving these results, your doctor and you will need to sit down and create a plan of action.

People who have kidney disease also have an increased chance of developing heart problems. Therefore, one of the first things to do upon CKD diagnosis is to get control of other health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure and anemia.

If you have diabetes, you will need to monitor your blood sugar, follow a specific diet and take your medication as ordered by your doctor. If you have high blood pressure, your doctor may recommend you lose weight, cut down on salt in your diet and take your medication. Anemia (low blood count) can also lead to heart damage and may be controlled by taking a hormone called EPO and iron supplements. You should also have healthy cholesterol levels and not smoke.

Once your kidney disease and other health problems are under control, it is vital to track your progress. Your glomerulare filtration rate (GFR) should be checked regularly to clarify the status of your kidney disease. Also, the amount of protein in your urine will be checked from time to time to make sure your kidneys are doing their job. Lastly, nutritional tests may be done to make you sure you are getting enough protein and calories to maintain your overall health. Your doctor can refer you to a registered dietitian who will help you plan your meals to get the right foods in the right amounts.

"Little things can make a big difference..."

This was the phrase that served as the driving force behind the beautiful life and caring actions of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman. Becca, a cheerleader, honor student, and caring young woman, passed away in a tragic automobile accident on August 20, 2003. Today, her family and friends not only remember Becca for her great love and friendship, but also for her contributions to the community.

It's just a dress...but it's so much more!

In the Spring of her Freshman year at Nova High School in Davie, Florida, Rebecca launched a dress drive to provide prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who could not afford to purchase them. Rebecca was a passionate, bright, fun-loving young woman who loved being with her friends and felt that no one should miss a high school event because they couldn't afford to be there. She saw the inequity in the situation and sought to change things. During the Spring of her sophomore year, Becca single-handedly collected and donated over 250 formal dresses and helped hundreds of girls across South Florida attend their High School proms in style.

To keep Becca's dream alive, countless dedicated people throughout the world have joined with her family and friends to provide opportunities for those who seek them. Volunteers work toward a common goal initiated by Becca.

Although the core mission of Becca's Closet was to collect and distribute dresses, their goals have expanded to offer additional opportunitites for deserving young people. In the spirit of Rebecca's visions and aspirations, the foundation fundraises to award educational scholarships to recognize the exemplary efforts of young men and women who demonstrate Becca's spirit of generosity in their communities.

Rebecca Kirtman was a generous young woman and a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter, student and friend. Although Becca is no longer with us, her dream lives on and Becca's Closet will continue and grow to assist our youth and forever embrace the spirit of Rebecca Kirtman.

What an amazing few days I had in Dothan, Alabama at the Competitive Image Trunk show! The Competitive Image is the Official Clothier for International Pageants. It is owned and operated by Joey Retherford and Clay Spann of Clay Spann Photography.

It was the perfect opportunity to connect with some of my Mrs.International Sister Queens and meet the Mrs. International staff. A great big shout out to the lovely Kimberly Takla Mrs. Western States International 2010 and her beautiful friend Tamara Wissbaum Mrs. Oregon International 2007. I also had the privilege of meeting my Teen Counterpart Lauren Eschbach Miss Teen Florida International 2010 and Mrs. New Jersey International 2010 Heather Cunningham. Our visit was short however our memories will last a lifetime.

Gracious thanks to Mary Richardson, Susan Botek, Joey Retherford and Clay Spann for helping me to create the perfect wardrobe for Mrs. International. I would like to thank all of you for your kindness, patience, your words of wisdom and mostly for your friendship.

NBC6 Health & Fitness Expo

The NBC6/Telemundo 51 6th annual Health & Fitness Expo was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center on April 17th and 18th. The Expo was a free public event designed to capture the attention of tens of thousands of health-conscious consumers. Attendees were given access to free, potentially life saving, health tests and screenings and valuable medical and health information. Guests were also engaged and entertained by a variety of interactive sports and activities that were fun for the whole family, including Healthy Cooking demonstrations, soccer, rock climbing and much more.

The National Kidney Foundation was definitely the crowds favorite with over 40 volunteers, doctors and nurses all working so diligently to spread the importance of life saving early detection. The NKF offered free risk factors, blood pressure, height, weight and a free consultation with a nephrologist.

It was a beautiful funfilled day of meeting and greeting people and speaking with them about The National Kidney Foundation. I am honored to be a family member of this outstanding organization. Just ask anyone who has been touched by The National Kidney Foundation.

The fourth annual WorldFest Celebration got into full swing on Sunday April 11th at the Sportsplex in Coral Springs, Florida.

The festival covered a spectacular array of multi-cultural entertainment, cuisine and culture that salutes the diverse population in the Coral Springs area. Delicious cultural foods, live music, arts and crafts, educational activities, and amusements for children were featured.

The morning started off with a drizzle and before noon the clouds opened and down came the rain. With the rain came wind and lightening. We had to clear the Sportsplex several times because the lightening monitor sounded off.

Nevertheless, the event was so much fun! I met so many amazing new friends and enjoyed the diverse cultures. Looking forward to next years WorldFest!

On Saturday, March 27, 2010 Michael and I attended the THE "GOLDFINGER" GILDED AFFAIR. The Gilded Affair is the 4th Annual benefit for the National Kidney Foundation of Florida in Palm Beach County raising funds to support the Foundation's mission to prevent kidney diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease, and increase the availability of organs for transplant.

The evening was magically filled with great company, goodwill, outstanding entertainment, scrumptious food and a very special visit from Sean Connery AKA...John Allen a Sean Connery impersonator. He was amazing!! He gave me the chills! I have always had a secret crush on Sean Connery!

I am so very blessed to be connected to such dynamic friends in the fight against kidney disease. Gracious thanks to the Gilded Spa & Salon. I look forward to seeing everyone again very soon.

What an incredibly moving meeting we had at the Miami Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group. My dear friends never seize to amaze me with their stories of survival. This support group gives us the opportunity to reach out to each other and understand what each person is feeling. It really is a gift and I am blessed to have my dear friends as part of my life.

Many members have recently had kidney transplants and some are on dialysis waiting for a transplant. Many are educating themselves about kidney disease because a loved one is affected. What ever the reason, we are all connected through kidney disease.

Our guest speaker was Maureen Merrick-Rose MS,RD,LD/N. Maureen talked about Complete Dialysis Care & Nutrition. I was taken back for a moment when I saw Maureen because I realized that she was the nurse that cared for my mother-law Judie up until the day she passed. It had been ten years and she still remembered my mother-law. Now that is an amazing woman and nurse. Thank you and may God Bless you Maureen.

On March 2, more than 100 PKD Champions visited Capitol Hill to advocate for the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act (H.R. 1458/S. 565). Thanks to their efforts, seven additional members of Congress signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation.

It only takes a few minutes to e-mail your representative. Act now and urge them to co-sponsor the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act (H.R. 1458). This small and easy step will help improve the lives of thousands of kidney transplant patients.

Today is World Kidney Day! It's the perfect time to look back and celebrate the progress made in the fight against kidney disease.

In 1950, when the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) was founded, people with kidney failure had little hope or available treatments: there was no dialysis or transplants, which meant they simply died.

Today, kidney patients can enjoy rich and productive lives, and NKF is proud to have played a role in providing vital programs and services for these individuals and their families for the past 60 years. But, now we need your help more than ever.

The scope of kidney disease continues to grow: 26 million Americans--1 in 9-- have chronic kidney disease. More than 367,000 currently depend on dialysis for survival. More than 83,000 are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Every two hours , one person waiting for a kidney dies.

WOW!! What an amazing day!! I am still beaming with excitement and admiration for the 2000 people that joined us on this beautiful Miami Sunday morning to honor their loved ones and walk in support of expanding Kidney Disease Awareness....A Life Saving Movement.

This year, Walgreens partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Florida for an instore Point of Purchase Campaign which will help educate, create awareness on kidney disease and help promote the 2010 Miami Kidney Walk to raise much needed funds. Walgreens generously presented the National Kidney Foundation of Florida with a check in the amount of $22,739.00. Thank you Walgreens!

Alonzo Mourning seven-time National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star and center for the Miami HEAT, and 2003 kidney recipient was the guest of honor and I was honored to kick-off the walk with him.

Feeding South Florida Fundraiser

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School National Art Honor Society, hosted a fundraiser dinner to benefit Feeding South Florida, a Not-for-profit organization.

Feeding South Florida empowers other South Florida Not-for-profit organizations to assist people in need and improve their lives. They do this by providing food and other grocery products; and by educating and engaging all communities to fight hunger and poverty.

Soup, bread, and beverages were served and generously donated by local restaurants. Students created beautiful "Homes for Haiti" pins to raise donations for Haiti. Guests received an empty bowl creatively made by the MSD National Art Honor Society.

It was a funfilled evening of amazing camaraderie and goodwill. I applaud the MSD National Art Honor Society on a job well done.

A few guidelines can help you treat yourself or your sweetie and still stay within the sodium, potassium and phosphorus targets for a renal diet.

Kidney Diet Tips for Eating Out on Valentine's Day -

Make dinner reservations! A long wait and hunger contributes to less control over food choices.

Study the menu online before going to the restaurant.

Request no added salt to food and sauces or gravies on the side if possible.

Share an entree or dessert to help stay within your diet goals or take a portion home.

Enjoy the ambiance and your sweetie instead of focusing on food too much.

If you are on limited liquids, choose your favorite beverage and stick to one small portion.

Go Red for Women proudly recognizes International Pageant's Alliance with The American Heart Association. Once again I would like to give great thanks to the Mrs. International Pageant for opening a new door for me. In addition to my own personal family platform of raising greater awareness and hope about Kidney Disease, I am now a Go Red for Women Ambassador. The two truly share an intimate connection.

So on this beautiful sunny day in South Florida, the Broward County Go Red for Women Chapter all united to show our support in honor of saving lives.

The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital ~ A Valuable Community Resource

What an amazing afternoon at The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital! The Center is dedicated to serving the community by providing learning experiences about the fascinating wonders of Florida's wild life and natural ecosystems. The Wildlife Hospital's rehabilitation program provides comprehensive medical and rehabilitative care for sick, injured and orphaned wild birds, mammals and reptiles. Their goal is to return recovered patients to their natural habitats. Those that cannot be released will become "Educational Ambassadors" (part of the center's educational animal collection).

Education on habitat restoration, native plant landscaping and wildlife management are some of the ways in which the center can help people co-exist with wildlife and nature. The Sawgrass Nature Center has received certification by the National Wildlife Federation and NatureScape Broward. This "Florida Friendly" property conserves water resources and provides valuable wildlife habitat.

It was such an honor getting to know the incredible people that volunteer with such dedication and mostly their hearts to help preserve wildlife. They gave me the grand tour of the entire facility including getting up close and personal with some pretty cute critters. The raccoons were my absolute favorite! I was able to hand feed and actually walk a one year old male named "Woody" on a harness leash. It was just like walking my dog and I wanted to take him home with me. Too cute for words!

The event also featured live wildlife presentations, environmental displays & seminars, environmentally inspired vendors, wildlife art , plant sale, food, games and entertainment.

A great big warm and heartfelt thank you to The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital for welcoming me and educating all of us on the importance about the fascinating wonders of Florida's wildlife and natural ecosystems.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929- April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches. [1] A Baptist minister,[2] King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as it's first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

What an extraordinary life it was. His legacy will continue forever.

Earthquake in Haiti

Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2010 the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The intial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater then magnitude 5.0. Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed, from shantytown homes to national landmarks. Millions are displaced, and thousands are feared dead as rescue teams from all over the world are now descending on Haiti to help where they are able.

May God open the doors of great countries and the hearts of all people to help the people of Haiti.

There's an intimate connection between your kidneys and heart.

Did you know that cardiovascular risk starts even when kidney function is mildly impaired? Also, are you aware that cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 50% of all deaths amoung people with chronic kidney disease?

There is indeed a link between the state of your heart and kidneys. Any acute or chronic disease in either the heart or kidneys can affect the other organ in an acute or chronic manner. What this means is you may be able to prevent cardiovascular disease by protecting your kidneys, and vice versa.

One of the functions of the kidneys is to regulate blood pressure. If they are diseased, high blood pressure results and this, further damages the kidneys. Uncontrolled high blood pressure will damage the body's blood vessels and accelerate the development of a heart attack or stroke.

As part of your usual efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease regardless of your risk profile, a simple urine albumin test to detect kidney disease could be one of the best decisions anyone can make. You never know what the results might show.

When it comes to chronic kidney disease, early detection saves lives.

I had the privilege of participating in the Nationally Televised Orlando Citrus Parade.

The Citrus parade is a thirty year Orlando holiday tradition. The parade includes a week long celebration of Citrus fun leading up to the Champs Sports Bowl and the Capital One Bowl with Florida's top college football teams.

Mrs. Florida International Director Michael Galanes generously provided a beautiful float for our participation in the parade. I had the opportunity to share the experience with Little Miss & Mister Citrus National Winners.

It was a perfect funfilled day of meeting new friends and basking in the true honor of being Mrs. Florida International 2010.

One of my greatest joys in life is working with and mentoring young ladies and gentlemen to become self inspiring. Nothing is more beautiful than potential.

Mentoring is about genuinely sharing your knowledge and experience and helping a younger developer become a better craftsman. There is no one thing you can do to be a great mentor, rather it is a matter of doing a lot of little things and doing them consistently and well. Mentoring is an ongoing opportunity.

It is always such an incredible feeling knowing that I am leaving a tiny little foot print in the heart of our world's future mentors.

Senate Amendment on Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage

Many kidney transplant patients cannot afford immunosuppressive drugs without the help of Medicare. Without these drugs, the chances that a patient's transplanted kidney will be rejected greatly increases, which can force them back on to dialysis or require them to undergo another transplant.

Under current Medicare coverage policy once the 36-month period ends, kidney transplant patients are forced to find other ways to pay for the expensive immunosuppressive medications. The Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage Kidney Transplant Patient Act H.R. 1458/S.565 would end the 36-month limit for anti-rejection medications and give coverage for life.

PKD is the No.1 genetic cause of End Stage Renal Disease (Kidney Failure) in the United States and the No.4 cause, overall. PKD patients currently occupy more than 5,000 spots on the kidney transplant waiting list.

On behalf of patients and their families suffering from polycystic kidney disease that affects more than 600,000 Americans I ask you to please co-sponsor The Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage Kidney Transplant Patients Act (H.R. 1458/s.565).

Christmas on Las Olas with Go Red for Women

It's December 1st and there couldn't have been any better way to kick off the 2009 Holiday Season then to spend it with my dear Go Red for Women friends at Christmas on Las Olas.

Since 1965 Christmas on Las Olas has been an annual South Florida tradition that officially ushers in the holiday season. It is filled with all the Las Olas Christmas traditions. Restaurants, vendors, charities, musicians, artists, christmas carolers, kids decorating cookies, hot chocolate, Santa & Mrs. Claus, elves, reindeer and the most magical suprise of all.... a Floridian's dream come true...........SNOW!!!! Of course at seventy eight degrees it melted just as quick as it flew out of the machine but for those very few short seconds we had a magical moment with snow.

In the end forty-thousand people walked through Christmas on Las Olas. Go Red for Women had a very productive and fun filled evening of promoting awareness, signing up ladies and gentlemen for the movement and giving out blinking heart light up rings.

Kidney Friendly Candy

With the Holiday Season upon us indulging in sweets is inevitable. Candy seems to be everywhere - from a coworker's candy jar to the checkout register at a restaurant - easily triggering a sweet tooth. People generally experience a craving for candy, but for those on a kidney-friendly diet, there are some candies that are better suited than others.

For people with chronic kidney disease, some candies can be too high in phosphorus, potassium or sodium, which is restricted on the kidney diet. But that doesn't mean you can't satisfy your sweet tooth.

There are candies that are okay for people with chronic kidney disease and those on dialysis. In order to find out which candy is acceptable, check the nutrition label on the candy's package to make sure it is low in phosphorus and sodium. Because phosphoprus and potassium aren't always listed on the nutrition label, refer to this list of some candies that are kidney-friendly.

Keep in mind to check with your physician/dietitian who can help modify your diet into one that includes kidney-friendly candy.

H1N1, the Flu and the Kidneys

Medical experts recommend kidney patients, including those with PKD, get doctor's okay before getting any flu shot.

You've been hearing a lot about the flu lately - especially the H1N1 virus. It's important to note there are two types of flu viruses: The seasonal strains which occur every year - and the H1N1strain.

Novel H1N1 (referred to as "swine flu") is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was underway. The term "pandemic" refers to widespread infection in the population, however, H1N1 is a mild form of flu, for most people. This virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009 and is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, through coughing or sneezing near others. In some cases the virus can be picked up by touching something with the virus on it and then touching the eyes, mouth or nose.

Those currently at higher risk of the H1N1 strain include children under five, pregnant women, people at any age with chronic medical conditions, anyone with a weak immune system, residents in nursing homes and other chronic care facilities and people over 65.

People who have had a kidney transplant and are on immune-suppressant medication may be more prone to the effects of any flu virus. Research shows the flu vaccine is less effective in generating antibody production in people who have had kidney transplants in the past six months because immunosuppressive drugs weaken the normal immune response to foreign tissue, bacteria and viruses.

Honoring our Veterans on Veterans Day

There is no greater sacrifice than serving in the military to protect the country you love. As Americans, we all should be most indebted to the men and women who gave and give of their hearts, their time and some the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, to protect us all. Veterans Day is an annual holiday to honor America's veterans of the military. Celebrated each year on November 11, it is a day that some today barely notice, and that is a travesty. The day holds much significance though as it's the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, which ended the major hostilities of World War I.

Originally called Armistice Day, the name was officially changed to Veterans Day after World War II to honor American veterans of ALL wars.

The Coconut Creek American Legion Post # 170 sponsored a Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Park with a rifle salute and taps by the Coconut Creek Police Deptartment. The Jr.R.O.T.C. of Coconut Creek High School presented and retired the colors.

Due to inclement weather we were forced to move the ceremony five miles north to the Rec Complex. My camera stopped working, it was raining cats and dogs however not anything could have stopped us from honoring our countries Veterans.

I would like to give an extra special thank you to a very special Veteran and my loving Father Kevin.

We all work extremely hard but we definitely play harder on our traditional quarterly Walt Disney World getaways.
It was a perfect funfilled family weekend to regroup and celebrate mom's victory. Oh and let's not forget to mention all the delicious Disney fudge!

My hair and makeup was just too beautiful for words. I felt so incredibly beautiful that I did not wash my face for 12 hours! It was so worth it!!

Walk for PKD

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting more than 600,000 Americans and 12.5 million newborns,children and adults worldwide each and everyday .

PKD is more common than Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and sickle cell anemia - combined.

PKD causes fluid-filled cysts to form on both kidneys. Over time, these cysts grow and multiply, sometimes dramatically in size ultimately shutting down the kidneys.
Once that happens, dialysis and transplant are the only options to prolong life. Parents with the dominant form of PKD have a 50% chance of passing the disease on to each of their children.
I knew twenty years ago when I married my loving husband Michael that it was in the best interest of my family to completely educate myself and become proactive about PKD.

My beloved mother-in-law and dear friend Judie Brown lost her battle against PKD as she could no longer endure dialysis treatments. Our Uncle Steve received the gift of life through organ donation in 1998 and renewed his quality of life. My brother-in-law receives dialysis treatments three days a week and is undergoing test to insure a perfect match for transplantation.
This silent killer has touched my family not once, but three times. I have been a steadfast member of the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation since 1989 and partnering with state, national & worldwide organizations is the key to success.

The PKD Foundation's signature fundraising event is the Walk for PKD. Each year the Walk for PKD is coordinated and run by volunteers who donate their time, talent and treasure - making it possible for 89 cents of every dollar raised at the Walk for PKD to go directly to PKD research.
On this very special day we walked in remembrance and honor of our Dear Mother Judie Brown and all the lives that have succumbed to Polycystic Kidney Disease.
We walk until no one suffers the full effects of PKD.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is a time to honor breast cancer survivors, remember those we've loved and lost, and raise funds and awareness to help end this disease.

The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund which provides FREE mammograms to women who otherwise would not be able to afford them held their annual Open House Social/Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Coral Springs Medical Center.

At the event, the newly created "Recipes for Life" Cookbook which includes recipes submitted by hospital staff and community members was on sale to benefit the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. There were also physician and radiologist information booths, a triple-touch self-breast exam booth, fundraising raffles, music and refreshments for all!

Miami PKD Chapter Meeting

This weekend I attended the quarterly Miami PKD Chapter meeting. It's always so great to connect with my fellow crusaders in the fight to find a treatment and cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease.
With the help of PKD Foundation Chapters in cities across the country and beyond, the PKD Foundation provides a forum for patients and their families who want to join in the fight to raise awareness and funds for PKD research.
They were all very excited to hear that three times was the charm for me and that I am finally Mrs. Florida International 2010! Capitol Hill here we come!
